I began my career over thirty ago making the transition from collector (African American Studies) to dealer. Since the beginning I have never lost the “thrill of the hunt” for both objects and knowledge nor have I lost the excitement for the “tactile” experience with the material. I respect and love both the content and the presentation. I particularly enjoy finding and placing with libraries and institutions “primary source material” and in that activity play my small part in defending against “revisionist” history.
General Chronology and Highlights:
…. Produced my first used, rare and out of print catalogue, A Miscellany of Books, in 1980.
…. Opened a “brick and mortar” shop in 1984-1989 with a general stock and a specialty in African American Studies and as a result engaging with many persons from the political, literary, scholarly and Civil Rights community.
…. Contracted with the Atlanta History Center for my first appraisal in 1985 to determine the value of an iconic collection of photographs of a local photo journalist.
…. Sold material and provided institutional appraisals including Emory University, University of Georgia, Auburn Avenue Library on African American History and Culture, Atlanta History Center, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta Public Schools and Tulane University. Consulted to and helped build personal libraries including the collection of Civil Rights hero, Dr. C.T. Vivian.
…. Appeared in three 2010 episodes of the Discovery Channel’s Auction Kings as an “expert appraiser”.
…. Exhibitor at Antiquarian Book Fairs in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, St. Petersburg and Cowan, Tennessee.
…. Member in good standing of the Georgia Antiquarian Booksellers Association.
General:
Born in Laramie, Wyoming, however, by birth culture is Southern Appalachian. Undergraduate degree is Majors in English and History and Minors in Art and Philosophy. Graduate degree is Masters of Social Work. Traveled in Africa and the Caribbean. Wide variety of experience in government, politics, non-profits and small business.
